vol. 5

  • steelers' tailgates are always a good time -- steelers' tailgates held on a friday in tucc's driveway are that much better, though...
  • pretty cool to talk to people about what they hear when they listen to music... interesting to hear steve mention last night that there are times that he doesn't even hear the words being sung in a song... i'm pretty much the opposite -- the words almost always come first for me...if you're not sure exactly what you hear, try this -- listen to this song by nick drake -- what do you hear? (it's called one of these things first, and i know it gets cut off, but you'll get the point, i hope...)
  • case in point... my favorite opening lines from a song, for the longest time, were from beck's loser... in the time of chimpanzees i was a monkey...this was the case until this morning when i heard bitch went nuts by ben folds for the first time... the bitch went nuts/she stabbed my basketball...
  • i've often struggled with my like/dislike of "the classics" -- there are tons that i love (atlas shrugged, gatsby...) and others that i just can't take (naked lunch, howl...) this goes for music, also...
  • beck, loved the cd -- but you should have known better than to think you were going to get the band past me! see the bullet above for my opinion on up on cripple creek -- i bet you can guess which category it falls under...
  • for a better example of robbie robertson's passion, in my opinion, check out this song called showdown at big sky (scroll down a little and press the red button...and that would be the bodeans singing background on the song...)
  • if you have never seen the movie the money pit, you should -- especially if you own your own home... i always loved this movie, but now i truly understand it -- the looks on tom hanks' face as he is running up the staircase that is falling down is worth watching this movie in itself... (the link i've provided will take you to a clip of some of the better parts of the movie...)
  • i invented the houdini...

  1. i think we may have talked about this before but i rarely ever listen to the lyrics of a song. i am a big fan of harmony, so when i listen to music i get my enjoyment out of the mixure of the music and the voice, where the voice is almost an instrument in itself. looking back now its more than likely the way I could listen to such crap in high school was because i never really paid much attention to what they were saying...

i must admit though lately i have been trying to pay attention to lyrics in songs more. however i feel as if word meanings are only an enhancement to a song and not what makes or breaks the song to me.

for example earlier this week, i was talking to a friend about this song i love called "ten minutes" by the get up kids because she said she was moving "ten minutes from downtown" which is a lyric from the song. so i shared the song with her and sent the lyrics and after reading the lyrics the song just really hit home with me.

  2. i would say that your like of this song illustrates perfectly what i'm getting at, nick...i got your email with the lyrics and was definitely intrigued -- providing that one of the guys in that group wrote the song, then there's definitely talent there -- but then i listened to it and was extremely disappointed -- that guy can't sing to save his life, in my opinion -- absolutely horrendous -- so if you're hearing the instruments (and not counting the voice as an instrument), then i can understand where you're coming from -- if you're listening to that voice and like it, well...

  3. he is not the lead singer, however he sings one song on each album. it comes from the album, "something to write home about"which i would consider one of my top 3 albums of all time.
